  • Muscle Density
  •   Why do people still fear that weight training will cause them to "bulk up" or prevent them from losing weight? Probably because once they begin lifting weights, the needle on the scale doesn't drop like they'd like it to. However, if they used a tape measure they would find that they are losing inches, and if they had their bodyfat tested they would find it has decreased! Why?

Muscle has a higher density than fat. If one pound of muscle is setting next to one pound of fat on your dinner plate (sorry for the analogy folks!), the portion of fat is much larger even though both portions weight the same. The more muscular you are, the tighter, firmer, and thinner you appear, even if you never lose a pound! As a bonus, weight training increases your bone density, muscle strength, and metabolism. Combine it with the right amount of cardio/aerobic training and you'll see results, fast!

Do not measure your fitness progress by using your bathroom scale! Whether you are gaining or losing weight, the best indicator of your progress is achieved by measuring your bodyfat percent. Even if the bathroom scale reads the same over a period of time, you may be losing unwanted bodyfat and replacing it with healthy muscle tissue!

  • Erectile Dysfunction
  •

    By William Harrison, M.D.

Erectile dysfunction includes both impotence and the inability to develop a firm erection. Erectile disorders were once discussed only behind closed doors. However, with the widespread advertising of medications like Viagra, the topic is discussed freely by men and women of all ages.

Most cases of erectile dysfunction (E.D.) do not have a specific cause, but they are more common as men age. Certain diseases that lead to blood vessel or nerve damage can lead to E.D. These include artery blockages, neuropathies, blood cell disorders, spinal cord injuries, hormone deficiencies and diabetes. These cases are more difficult to treat than idiopathic (no cause) cases.

Treatment in the past has included injected medications, pumps and even penile implants. These had varying rates of success, but were generally disappointing. Medications like Viagra have revolutionized treatment. It is generally safe and effective, and it is given orally. It should not be used by patients who are on nitrate medications (used for heart conditions), since the combination may cause a drop in blood pressure. Viagra increases blood flow, resulting in a firmer erection. Most couples find that it can significantly improve their sexual health if E.D. has become a problem.

    Elderly Health Watch

    - Elderly individuals can help spot and prevent serious health problems by keeping an eye out for unexpected weight loss. "His or her metabolism may not slow down to conserve energy and preserve body mass," explains researcher Susan Roberts in the Journal of Nutrition.

    No Safe Tans?

    - A new study finds that tanning beds may prove as harmful as outdoor ultraviolet ray exposure, leading to DNA damage that may trigger skin cancer. Indoor tanning is often promoted as a safe alternative to outdoor tanning, despite studies suggesting that indoor tanning salons are tied to an increased rate of melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer. The new study, which appears in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, examined skin and blood samples from volunteers who received 10 full-body tanning salon treatments over a two-week period. Chemicals in the tissue samples indicated DNA damage, and the quantity of these chemicals in the skin after just one exposure was similar to the quantity in skin that received all 10 exposures. "There is no such thing as a safe tan," concludes researcher S. Elizabeth Whitmore. "A suntan is the skin's response to an injury and every time you tan you accumulate damage to the skin, as well as accelerating the aging process and increasing your risk for skin cancer."

  •   "A 'Thank You' is in order. Since buying your video I have lost 25 lbs over the last 12 weeks! My goal is to lose another 20. Your advice on how to change your eating habits has been a big help, and the videos have made me feel confident in the weight room. Sometimes all people need is a little structure and guidance to follow and you do a great job of providing that!"
    -- Sam Leesch

"Two years ago I was an overweight, out of shape 50 year old woman. And I was depressed about it. I decided to join a health club and use the cardiovascular machines. My weight stayed stubbornly the same. Then I started your program and everything changed. I started working out 2 times a week and overnight I was hooked! The program taught me the proper technique and what NOT to do while exercising. Your knowledge and dedication made all the difference. In 6 months I lost 34 pounds and went from a size 16 to a size 10! My depression is gone and I feel like I can accomplish anything! I am in better shape than when I was 20! Thanks!"
    -- Laurie C.
