MrTrainer's Tip

Locking your elbows while lifting weights places excessive pressure on your elbow joints, tendons, and ligaments. Continuous elbow locking can cause tennis elbow (an inflammation of the elbow tendons), even if you've never played tennis.

Locking your elbows also can cause bursitis by rupturing the little lubrication capsules (the bursa) in your joints. Bursitis results in swelling, pain, and tenderness at the elbow.

The solution is to extend the arms to a position just before tension is taken off of the working muscles. It is much easier to demonstrate using video rather than pictures or text, which is why the MrTrainer videos are so helpful.

Doc Talk

In the first part of this series we discussed sun-induced skin damage, and ways to protect yourself from it. In this part we'll discuss skin cancer. It is generally divided into melanoma and non-melanoma cancers.

Melanoma
- This is an aggressive form of skin cancer, derived from the pigment-producing melanocytes. It tends to metastasize (spread) through the body--once this happens, treatment is very difficult, and often, unsatisfactory. In its earliest form, it appears as a pigmented lesion on the skin. Warning signs include variation in pigmentation (varying colors such as brown, black, blue and red), size greater than 1cm, irregular borders, and oozing or bleeding. It is treated by wide-excision (cutting out) of the cancer to ensure that all margins are free of tumor. In some cases a procedure known as 'sentinel node biopsy' is performed to check for spread into adjacent lymph nodes.

Non-melanomas
- Basal cell cancer and squamous cell cancer are included in this group. 1.3 million new cases are diagnosed in the U.S. each year, making these two together the most common type of cancer. They are usually found in patients over 50, and commonly occur on sun exposed areas such as the face, neck, ears, arms and hands. Basal cell cancers may have an ulcerated center, heaped-up 'pearly' edges, and small red blood vessels leading into the center. They rarely spread, and are treated by wide excision.

- Squamous cell cancers do have the potential to spread, and are notable for a red, irritated-looking area that will not heal. In early stages they too are treated with wide excision.

Young Women Smokers

- Cigarette smoking can cause brain aneurysms, especially in young women. "The warning on a pack of cigarettes doesn't mention brain aneurysm, and most people are surprised to find that can be a complication of cigarette smoking," says Dr. Thomas Kopitnik of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. "This is really a silent killer."

Whole Grain Benefit

- Diets rich in whole grains have been shown to lower the risk of heart disease, diabetes, many forms of cancer, and intestinal troubles like diverticulitis.

Sugar and Gallstones

- According to Tufts University, a preliminary study conducted in southern Italy found that people who ate 400 calories or more of refined sugar (found in foods such as cakes, cookies, soft drinks, and table sugar) each day were three times more likely to suffer from gallstones as those who ate no more than 260 calories of the sweet stuff a day. Those who consumed at least 600 calories from sugar were six times more likely to develop gallstones.
