    Trainer's Tip

Picture this: slabs of fat hanging over the sides of your jeans. These are love handles. I answer almost 5 Emails per day dealing with love handles. A common question is "What exercises can I do to get rid of my love handles?". Answer the following with TRUE or FALSE:

    1. Women don't get love handles.
FALSE. Contrary to popular belief, women can develop unsightly love handles just like men.

    2. Love handles don't go away when you train your abs and obliques.
TRUE. Your abs and obliques are muscles. Love handles are excess fat and will not go away unless bodyfat is decreased.

    3. Doing side bends will make love handles bigger.
FALSE. Side bends are an exercise that work the obliques. Keep in mind, however, that the obliques may grow in size with this exercise so it is wise to avoid side bends and work them instead using a "crunch" or "twist" motion as shown in the Mr. Trainer videos.

In conclusion, love handles go away but only if you decrease your bodyfat by weight training, performing cardio, and eating right. Remember it is always a good idea to get your bodyfat tested so you can monitor your results. Visit the "exercise tips" area as well as the "nutrition" area.

  • Breast Cancer (Part I)

    Doc Talk

In this two part series we'll discuss diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.

    Risk Factors
    - In the United States, the risk of developing breast cancer is 1 in 8 by age 95, although much of this risk is after age 75. Risk factors include a family history of breast cancer in a first degree relative, early age of onset of menstruation, late menopause or late first pregnancy (after age 30). There may be a slight increased risk in users of oral contraceptives or postmenopausal estrogen. Approximately 5% of women with breast cancer carry one or two of the breast cancer genes, BRCA1 and BCRA2. Although women with this gene may have a 50 to 85 percent risk of cancer by age 80, it is not recommended that it be routinely tested for in the general population.

    Detection
    - The majority of cancers are discovered by the patient as a lump during self examination, which highlights the importance of SBE (self breast examination). Routine screening mammography reduces deaths due to breast cancer by 25 to 35 percent in women with no symptoms. Other methods such as screening ultrasounds and MRI technology are in development. Almost all authorities recommend yearly mammography after age 50, and some recommend periodic testing between age 40 and 50. Suspicious areas on mammography should be localized and biopsied. Any suspicious area on breast examination should be investigated thoroughly, even if the mammogram is negative.

In the next part of the series we'll discuss treatment of breast cancer.

    Fertility and Stress

    - A research team from Denmark has identified that women who are under high levels of stress and have longer than average menstrual cycles (35-days or longer) have a decreased fertility rate and an increased miscarriage rate. If you are planning a pregnancy, be sure to evaluate your stress level. Begin to evaluate ways to relieve stress--exercise, yoga, and other life-simplification methods.

    Women's Heart Disease

    - Researchers find that walking as little as one hour a week reduces a woman's heart disease risk by half!

    Women and Cancer

    - Researchers found lung cancer is now the leading cause of cancer death among women in the United States, with about 90 percent of these deaths attributable to smoking.

  •   "A 'Thank You' is in order. Since buying your video I have lost 25 lbs over the last 12 weeks! My goal is to lose another 20. Your advice on how to change your eating habits has been a big help, and the videos have made me feel confident in the weight room. Sometimes all people need is a little structure and guidance to follow and you do a great job of providing that!"
    --Sam Leesch

"I wanted to get in great shape by losing weight and getting stronger. Using your videos, I lost 32 pounds going from 257 down to 225. My strength increased between 30% to 50% on various exercises. Best of all, this took place over a period of 11 weeks. I'll continue to use your program forever."
    --Howard Cadwell

"I am a 59-year-old woman and will be 60 in a few months. Being fit or athletic was not something women my age were encouraged to do when we were young. Imagine my surprise when with your program I became a weight lifter. Imagine my surprise when I found out I am actually very strong, and, imagine my surprise when I bench pressed 125 pounds; enough to get my name on a wall plaque at my club. You are obviously a dedicated and knowledgeable trainer. Keep it up!"
    --Mary Tesch Scobey
