  •   3 Minute WHAT?

If you're like most people, you've been exposed to many infomercials and exercise gadgets promising quick results.

Unfortunately these companies do not care about you, let alone your results. The are in solely for the publicity, and BIG profits.

I remember not too long ago when an exercise video was released promising dramatic results in only 15 minutes 3 times a week. Next came the 10 minute solution, then the 8 minute abs, then the 4 minute fitness, and currently there is even a 3 minute "get fit quick" video! It takes me and my clients 10 minutes just to warm up!

Obviously, everyone is trying to "out do" each other simply going on to mislead the public and make big profits. Sorry folks, you will see little results with less than 3 hours of training each week. What's that you say? You don't have time? Do you know that 3 hours a week is less than 2 percent of 1 week's time?!

I think we can devote only 2 percent of our week to improving our appearance, energy, strength, health, sleep, and outlook on life. And there's no time like the present!

Wait and see- maybe I'll release the MrTrainer 2 minute "bun burner" and make millions. Or the 1 minute...

  •   Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar Fasciitis (FASH-e-i-tus) is a common cause of chronic, severe heel pain. This condition affects millions of people, especially those who spend large amounts of time on their feet. It may also affect athletes, especially runners, due to the repetitive heel strike that occurs with running.

The plantar fascia is a band of tissue that originates under the heel, and spreads out towards the toes. The tissue can become inflamed, similar to the process in tendonitis. This causes severe pain. The pain often occurs when standing after a night's sleep, since the ligaments and tendons haven't been stretched overnight. It also causes pain after excessive time on the feet.

Treatment in early stages includes stretching of the calf muscles, achilles tendon, and plantar fascia. Orthotics or supportive foot-beds may help by supporting the arch, preventing excessive strain on the fascia. In more severe or chronic cases, a steroid injection may be used to decrease inflammation.

Recently a new therapy has become available, and has generated a great deal of interest. Similar to the shock-wave treatments for kidney stones, orthotripsy uses sound or shock-waves directed at the inflamed area. This appears to disrupt the scarred or irritated tissues, which in turn, promotes healing. The long term effectiveness of this method is not known, and in some studies, the treatment groups did not show much improvement over the placebo groups. However, it may still be a promissing technique in refractory cases.

Anyone with heel pain, especially runners, should stretch regularly, and consider the use of supportive orthotics. If symptoms persist, consult your doctor or podiatrist.

  •   Liposuction
Liposuction is America's most popular surgery? Last year, physicians performed almost 300,000 procedures, nearly 300 percent more than in 1992. Remember: Liposuction doesn't work well in people with a lot of abdominal fat because much of the fat lies in the abdominal cavity, which the procedure cannot treat.

Weight Training Good for the Heart
As reported on CBS HealthWatch this past February, training with weights lowers bad cholesterol (LDL) and increases the good cholesterol (HDL). It also lowers blood pressure in response to lifting everyday loads, such as groceries and while climbing stairs. Weight training also helps to control bodyfat.

    Germ Heaven
Health clubs are a common place to come in contact with peoples' sweat. Keep your feet dry and avoid standing water and underchlorinated pools/spas. Wipe off your sweat and use a towel between you and the bench while weight training.

    Airport Health Clubs?
With all the time spent waiting in the airports last year (and this year), some airports- such as McCarran in Las Vegas- now offer health clubs where you can get your workout in, hot tub, and shower. Plans are underway to add health clubs to 9 more airports this year!
