  •   Crunches

Besides a great diet and plenty of cardiovascular exercise, abdominal training is a must if you want a great-looking midsection. Crunches are among the top on the list of ab movements, as they are safe, effective, and you can do them anywhere.

However, many people perform crunches incorrectly. To perform them correctly, use these tips: (1)Don't pull on your head and neck, (2)Keep your chin up and look at the ceiling/sky, and (3)Be sure to squeeze your abs at the top of each repetition.

Of course, variety is the spice of life, and there are numerous variations and difficulties of the crunch. Besides teaching you quickly and effectively, the MrTrainer videos provide you with a wide variety of abdominal movements and personalized workouts.

  •   Concussions

With Troy Aikman's announcement that he is retiring due to repeated concussions, this topic has been of interest to many readers.

A concussion usually occurs after a jarring trauma to the skull and brain. The soft brain is injured by being hit against the rigid bony skull. Although several categories of concussion exist, they all include some representation of the severity of injury. In all cases there is alteration in the level of consciousness, ranging from mild confusion to unconsciousness.

In more severe concussions, there is usually loss of consciousness, memory loss (amnesia), and possibly nausea, headaches, or incoordination. Any athlete who experiences any of these more severe symptoms should not be allowed to return to play. Furthermore, imaging of the brain with CT or MRI scans may be indicated.

Repeated concussions, as in Aikman's case, appear to predispose to further brain injuries, and also lower the threshold for further concussions. At a minimum, any athlete who has experienced a concussion should be monitored carefully, and any persistent or recurrent symptoms investigated promptly.

8 new activities have been added to the calorie-burning chart.

80,000 women were tracked for 20 years and researchers from Harvard found that the women who ate about four ounces of fish 2 to 4 times a week cut their risk if stroke by 48 percent.

Fat becomes body fat 5 times as easily as carbohydrates.

Research shows that a combination of weights & aerobics can give 3 times the fat loss of aerobics alone and doing just aerobics causes a disastrous muscle loss.

If you want to add a charred, smoky flavor to food, a healthier alternative is smoking meat, a process that generates fewer toxins than grilling.

Only 12 percent of Americans consistently workout three to five days a week!
