| Trainer's Tip | | | Big Time
If you're serious about getting big, you have to eat big. To make dramatic gains in muscular size, you need to eat at least four and up to six moderate to high-protein, high-caloric meals in addition to weight training 3-5 days per week.
Typical meals should consist of lean protein sources such as chicken, turkey, fish, some very lean red meats, skim milk, cottage cheese, protein powders or meal replacements, and eggs.
Carbohydrates should primarily stem from low-glycemic sources, with the exception of 1-2 hours following your workout. Great sources include potatoes, oatmeal, rice, fruits and other vegetables.
Keep in mind that you don't grow in the gym-that is merely the stimulous. You grow while you are resting and sleeping, which includes 7-9 hours each night.

| Doc Talk | | | Allergies
Unless you live just south of the Arctic Circle, spring signals the time for milder temperatures and allergies. Trees and grasses grow, and pollen counts begin to rise as plants wake up from their winter slumber. Millions of
people will feel the effects of these allergens.
Typical allergy symptoms may include runny or itchy nose, eye irritation or tearing, throat congestion, sneezing, and skin rashes. There may be other nonspecific complaints such as fatigue or headaches, which are often not linked to allergies.
Avoidance of allergens is difficult, since they are carried through the air. Non-seasonal allergens, such as animal dander or dust mites, can be minimized with proper housecleaning techniques or avoidance--although most pet owners would rather be miserable than give up their pet.
Treatment of allergy symptoms typically involves use of an antihistamine (especially the modern, non-sedating type), steroid nasal sprays, and eye drops. Patients with refractory allergies or complications such as asthma, may need to be evaluated by an allergist in order to perform skin testing or initiate desensitization immunotherapy ("allergy shots").
If allergy symptoms are well controlled, most patients can continue their exercise programs. View online | | |
