Kidney Stones
Kidney stones are painful blockages in the ureters of the urinary tract, usually caused by collections of calcium crystals. Most stones are small, less than 1 centimeter, but can cause a tremendous amount of pain as the body tries to 'push' them out of the urinary tract.
The pain is usually in the mid back area on one side, and radiates around the side and down into the groin. There may be blood in the urine, although it may be detectable only with a microscope.
The stones are usually treated by aggressively hydrating the patient with fluids and using pain medications. In cases of severe blockages, the stones may have to be removed surgically, or broken apart with sound waves (lithotripsy).
Although most stones are made of calcium, some are also made of uric acid, and this can accumulate to high levels in people eating certain high-protein diets.
