What is BMI? BMI stands for Body Mass Index.
It is a technique developed by the National Center for Health Statistics and helps determine the amount of body fat a person has. The higher your BMI, the greater risk you have of developing
health problems that include, but are not limited to, coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, certain
forms of cancer, and stroke. If you are overweight, the good news is that losing as little as 5% of your body
weight is likely to result in significant health improvements for you. Remember, athletes with a lot of muscle could be perfectly
healthy but not measure out well using this calculator.
BMI applies to males and females with the following exceptions:
- Persons younger than 18
- Competitive athletes
- Bodybuilders
- Pregnant or nursing women
- Frail or sedentary elderly people
