Back (Latissimus)

Why train your back?

  • Keep your shoulders healthy.
  • As pulling muscles, they help with picking things up and dragging things along for the ride (kids, luggage, etc.).
  • Toned upper back muscles help to make the waist look smaller.

Do:

  • On pulldown exercises, bring the bar in front of you.
  • Emphasize pulldowns and pull-ups for a wider upper back.
  • Focus squeezing your shoulder blades together on rowing exercises to reduce biceps involvement.
  • Emphasize good posture and sit up tall to protect your lower back.

Don't:

  • Rock back and forth during back exercises.
  • Pull the bar behind your neck on cable exercises.
  • Lean too far back during rowing exercises.
